Waterjet cut for edge to edge durability and a longer lasting target.  The MKM AR500 8″ gridded steel target is a 3/8″ thick and ready for punishment.  A 1″ grid is etched into the surface for a quick and easy group size estimation.  One carriage bolt hole, top center, is perfect for MKM T-Post mount.  Opt to have your target painted white for just $1 in the options above.  If shooting pistol under 100 yards, MKM recommends shooting the side without etching to prevent the possibility of a ricochet.

About AR500 Steel

The nomenclature, AR500 commonly heard when referring to steel targets, is referring to Abrasion Resistant (AR) steel with a Brinell Hardness of approximately 500.

AR500 steel is a low alloy steel that is quenched and tempered to a harness of 47 – 54 HRC (Rockwell Hardness) or 470 – 540 HBW (Brinell Hardness). Typical uses for AR500 include mining applications, or any surface that is going to be subject to excessive abrasive stress, my favorite use is for targets. Due to the steel’s hardness, drilling, machining, and cutting can be difficult. Most targets are cut using laser, plasma, or waterjet due to ease and their ability to quickly cut through hard steels. However, because the steel has been quenched and normalized, heating it above a temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit will reduce the hardness and strength of the steel. For instance, most very hard tool steels are tempered at a low temperature, while springs are tempered at a much higher temperature. Exceeding this critical temperature has serious consequences when trying to withstand objects flying at high velocities. This fact alone makes waterjet cutting the superior method for cutting AR500 steel. A target cut with waterjet will maintain a hardness of 47 – 54 HRC throughout the entire plate while a plate cut with a plasma or laser table will have reduced hardness and strength around the edges of the target.
